The CoalMine, with its coffee bar, the gallery and the event series bookbar, audiobar and filmbar, is located in the basement of the Volkart House in Winterthur, just opposite the main station.

It is a living space and performance location for modern literature and philosophy, for concerts, documentary films and for contemporary photographic art, as well as for all kinds of events. The CoalMine is a meeting place, library, and a forum for readings and lectures. It is a cultural interface for and with the people of Winterthur and for the guests of the city.

From the beginning, photography has been a focal point to the CoalMine. The gallery with its two sections – the Documentary Photography Forum and the annexed Room for Contemporary Photography – has become one angle of Winterthur’s photography triangle, which includes the Fotomuseum Winterthur and the Swiss Foundation of Photography. In its regular exhibitions the CoalMine fotogalerie features works of international and Swiss photographers. The on-line exhibition is accessible at www.coalmine-online.ch
